Hello everyone! Samantha here. As Anastasia said in the last post, I have a very special and fun post for guys.
On Thursday Bella and I went to a Harvey House museum.
For those who don't know what a Harvey House is,Wikipedia has a good article *here*. But, I will summarize it so if you don't want to, you don't have to read the whole article. Fred Harvey was the one who created the Harvey Houses. He was born in England and he came to the US when he was around 15. He started a chain of restaurants called Harvey Houses in 1878. They would be where the train stopped. The passengers would get off the train and have time to eat a 4 course meal in 30 minutes. The waitresses were called Harvey Girls. Back then waitresses were looked down upon and girls from "good" homes would not be waitresses, Not Harvey Girls! They had strict rules that they had to follow.
Fun fact: The Harvey Houses originated in Kansas!
Bella thought it would be fun if she sewed me a Harvey Girl costume. She only had 1 picture to go by, and no real pattern.
This is a Harvey Girl uniform. (With me next to it)
Bella got really close with my costume if I may say so myself!
The table settings had to be just right. They also had a special cup code which indicated which drink the customers wanted.
This is an old stove in the Harvey House that had been used in the 40's and 50's.
Here is a stereoscope. I used to have one but it is broken. :(
There was an old Bible in one of the rooms which the Harvey Girls would have stayed in.
Here is an autograph book where you would get your friends' signatures.
Bella loves these boots, but she would not want to lace them up!
Here we have a bed which one of the Harvey Girls would have stayed in, and a mirror, brush, and comb set in a nice little box.
The lady who gave us the tour was so nice! She was the one to suggest that Bella take a photo of me on the dresser and get the front and back of the bed in the picture. She also let us into the rooms and take pictures which not everybody else can do.
It's a foot warmer! This was used in horse and buggy days.. I thought that it was so funny and interesting that they used a plain old stone.
This is me in the serving window where they passed the food from the kitchen into the dining room.
One Harvey Girl reporting for duty!
I loved going to the museum so much! It was great. Bella also took a small photo-shoot of me which I will be posting later.
Do you think that Bella did a good job on my costume?
Have you ever heard of the Harvey Houses before?
See you guys later!
I love this post. Have you ever seen the movie "The Harvey Girls" starring Judy Garland? It is a great movie.
